Tasting Notes

Weren’t those Cheval Blancs good?  That 1937 has to be the best wine I’ve ever tasted (and one of the better curry dishes too!)

Auction News

We were fortunate to obtain both a 1945 and a 1961 Haut Brion at the November 13th Butterfield & Butterfield auction. The 1945 and 1961 Haut Brions are both 100 point wines, regarded among the best of the century.  These will be the centerpieces of our March event.

Tasting Notes

Remember that incredible 1971 Ch. Haut Brion Blanc?  It turns out than unlike other white Bordeaux, Haut Brion Blanc is a rare and very expensive wine.  The 1990 current release is $160 a bottle!  No wonder we liked it so much!  Fortunately we have two bottles left.

Tasting Notes

Wow!  What a great first event!  Who would have imagined that with all those 20 point ’74 Cabernets the best wine of the tasting would be a ’71 Haut Brion Blanc?!!  As luck would have it, that’s the only wine that we have more than one bottle of!  Look for another bottle at an upcoming event, perhaps in February.  Thanks to all for attending, and for the excellent wines you all brought.  Thanks to Andy for making the arrangements, and a special thanks to Ariel’s for providing such a nice environment.

Auction News

The next Butterfield & Butterfield auction is October 2nd.  By a stroke of good luck, I will be in Los Angeles on that date, and so will be able to attend in person.  This will give us some extra opportunities for “bottom fishing”, so rather than send out a list of potential lots I’ll wait and see what comes up.  There are some excellent Haut Brions from the 50’s, and two Petite Sirah verticals that look particularly interesting.

1993-5 70’s California Cabernet

Number 5 —  August, 1993

Auction News

We were fortunate to obtain two excellent lots at the July 17th, 1993 Butterfield & Butterfield  auction:

Lot 118

1937 Ch. Leoville-Barton

1937 Ch. Langoa-Barton

Lot 186

1960 B.V. Georges de LaTour Private Reserve

1966 B.V. Georges de LaTour Private Reserve

1968 B.V. Georges de LaTour Private Reserve

1968 B.V. Cabernet Sauvignon

The first lot went for only $170, $30 below our bid.  We’ll probably use this lot for an older Bordeaux tasting, or along with our Cheval Blancs.

The second lot contains my personal favorite wine, the 1968 BVGDLTPR.  These will all fit into an inevitable comprehensive GDLT tasting.

Upcoming Events

September 11th is the date for our early 70’s California Cabernet tasting!  Andy has made the following arrangements:

We will meet at Matha’s Vineyard (next to Arial’s Restaurant in the Beach Club Resort) at 4 p.m., sharp.  The Syndicate will provide appetizers for a half hour stand-up social.  Each couple may bring up to two wines to share during the appetizers or dinner.

At 4:30 we progress to Arial’s, where the table will be set with bread and ten glasses per person.  The following wines will be poured:

The manager of Arial’s will be joining us during the tasting.

Following the tasting, dinner may be ordered from any of the menu selections or day’s specials.  During dinner, the Syndicate will provide the following wines:

1971

Ch. Haut-Brion Blanc

White

1972

Mayacamas, Late Harvest

Zinfandel

The cost for dinner will be the menu price of the items you order, less 20%.  The 20% will be added back on as a gratuity.  In addition, $2 per person will be added to cover all wine corkage.

We have arranged this corkage charge to allow members to bring their own wines to share during the appetizers or dinner.

New Members

According to Andy, Howard and Becky will be joining prior to this tasting, which fills out our couples roster.  Martin Chaney is joining our group as a single.  This leaves an opening for one other single.  Welcome to all new members.

See you September 11th.

Auction News

After a four month hiatus, we are entering bids in the July 17th Butterfield auction.  We skipped bidding in the May auction because the selections were pretty uninteresting.

Treasurer’s Report

Dues of $150 per couple are due and payable now.  I will be in Korea for most of the month of July, so I would appreciate your mailing your dues to my office, so I can cover any auction purchases immediately upon my return.

Upcoming Events

After discussing it with several members, I think we will have a practice tasting of our case of early 70’s California Cabernets at a restaurant in August or September.  This will allow us to establish the format and evaluate the use of a restaurant for our meetings prior to undertaking the Haut Brion tasting.  I’m concerned about the transport and storage of the Haut Brions at a restaurant, and I think this warm up event will be informative and entertaining.  With Andy’s help, I’ll organize this event with you when I get back from Korea.

New Members

We still have four potential members to add to the group, including Martin.  Since Suzanne works on the weekends, Martin is looking for an individual to join with him.  Let me know if you have any nominees.

Bylaws Update

Andy has asked me to clarify some bylaws to facilitate signing up his nominees.  To wit:

In the event that a couple or individual member must leave the syndicate, the following buyout procedure will occur.  Based upon the total value of all items in the cellar at acquisition cost (including the originally seeded value fo the cellar), the value of the out-going member’s share will be computed.  This amount will be paid to the outgoing member from quarterly dues, over as many quarters as is required.  During this time the syndicate may add a replacement member, whose “buy in” cost will be computed in a similar manner.  In this event, the out-going member may be repaid out of the incoming member’s dues.

In the event that the membership decides to totally disband, the bottles will be distributed lottery style until each member reaches their pro-rata share, by value.

It is worthwhile to remember that the purpose of the group is to drink the wine we buy.  We will acquire inventory, but only to build a properly themed tasting.  Over time, the average base value of the cellar will remain at its originally seeded level of just under $2000. There is no intent to build up heirloom investment value.

The spirit of the group is to share one another’s company, and to share wines we could not otherwise afford to consume ourselves.

See you next month.

Auction News

As expected, the bids at the last Butterfield auction were quite high.  As a result, we were successful on only one lot.  We were fortunate, however, to acquire the best possible lot of the ones bid on.  This lot contained 1957 and 1958 Haut-Brion and 1957 and 1958 Cheval-Blanc.  In addition to filling in our Haut-Brion tasting, we now have six old bottles of Cheval Blanc for a future event.

Auction News

This Saturday marks the second Butterfield auction for us to bid at.  I’ve attached a list of our bids, and will let you know in a couple weeks how we did.  Frankly, I don’t expect much at this auction.  The bulk of the wines are from a well known collector, Dr. Marvin C. Overton, and I expect there to be a lot of bidding competition.

My bidding focus is on completing an Haut Brion collection for a comprehensive tasting this summer.

Other Acquisitions

Regardless of the March auction outcome, I plan to purchase some recent vintages of Haut Brion from Zachy’s to round out our tasting.  The ’86, ’87, ’88 and ’89 will be among these acquisitions.  Incidentally, the ’89 Haut Brion, at $119, is being touted as the best wine of a very best vintage, and is expected to double in price soon.

Upcoming Events

When should we schedule our first tasting?  Let’s confer at the larger group’s March meeting, and set a date.  Perhaps at that time we can also get an update from Andy on the restaurant possibilities.

Cellar Update

The wines from the last auction have been moved into the cellar, but not yet tagged.  As always, their condition appears to be perfect.  An updated listing, sorted by area, producer and vintage, is attached.

Closing Remarks

The enclosed article is excerpted from the Wine Spectator.  I found it interesting in a world dominated by huge spirit conglomerates to see exactly who owns what.

We’ll see you March 20th at John and Debbie’s.

1993-1 Introducing the Wine Syndicate

Here’s our group’s very first communication. As you read through these old newsletters, bear in mind that all communication was done by US mail, and that I also sent out Xerox copies of auction pages with wines we were bidding on. The paperwork tapered off after the first year, but the US mail communication continued for several years before everyone had email.

Number 1 —  January, 1993

Welcome to the organizational letter of a wine tasting group I’ve dubbed “The Wine Syndicate”.  If anyone can come up with a better name, I’m open to suggestions.

Charter

The purpose of the Wine Syndicate is to provide spectacular, themed tastings to its members about four times a year.  The wines for these tasting will be targeted and acquired over a period of months or years, through auctions and other purchases, plus trades with members.  Periodically the Syndicate’s cellar may be purged of excess wines by trading, re-auctioning, or selling or otherwise disbursing the excess wines to the members.

Membership

Group membership will be limited to ten, or perhaps twelve individuals.  Tentatively, the charter members are:

Steve & Linda Alcorn

Andy & Libby Crockett

Al & Carol Gane

John & Debbie Henline

Duane & Carol Holder

Acquisition Strategy

Initially the Syndicate will focus on acquiring wines through the Butterfield & Butterfield auctions, and perhaps local Florida charity events.

Butterfield & Butterfield auctions occur approximately six times per year.  The next auction is January 23rd, followed by one on March 13th.  Our goal at the auctions will be to average $500 of acquisitions, but because this is impossible to control when bids are submitted by fax, we will bid on many times this value of  lots but will place a $1200 limit on spending most of the time.  With four tastings per year, and assuming that our consumption balances our acquisitions, the average tasting will feature $750 to $1000 worth of wine.  While this may sound like a lot of wine, remember that the emphasis of our bidding will be on bottles which no individual members can afford.  This means that $300 bottles will not be uncommon.

Our purchasing emphasis will be on the following wines:

First Growth Red Bordeaux

Fine Red and White Burgundies

Chateau d’Yquem

BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve

Heitz Martha’s Vineyard

Dunn Howell Mountain

Caymus Special Selection

Stony Hill Chardonnay

Petite Sirah and Charbono verticals

Pre-1970 French wines in general

Pre-1980 California wines in general

Dues and Membership Privileges

Membership dues will be $150 per couple, quarterly.  The membership dues entitle that couple to attend all tasting events.  The cost of dinner is not included in club dues.  We will aim for an average of $25 per person plus tip, if possible.

Our tastings will attempt to group the wines in interesting vertical and horizontal ways.  Wines will always be tasted blind.

The wines will be tasted at either Steve & Linda’s house so they can be drunk between cellar and room temperature, or a local restaurant’s banquet facility.  Generally there will be one warm up wine, then a sit down tasting with ten glasses poured simultaneously.  All tastings will use our standard evaluation forms, and I hope to keep a complete set of these for our entertainment and perusal in the future.  Following the tasting, members are invited to bring a single brown bag wine per couple to taste while dinner is being set up. Dinner will then be accompanied by some of the lesser wines acquired as “filler” in our bid lots.

It is important to note that members do not have an ownership interest in the cellar; however all active members have the right to attend each of the Syndicate’s tastings.  I make this distinction in anticipation of the day when a member decides to leave the group, to make it clear that all wines acquired during their tenure remain in the Syndicate’s cellar.

Although we will mutually agree upon a convenient date for each tasting several months in advance, some unexpected conflicts are inevitable.  Should a couple not be able to attend, given reasonable notice the other members will attempt to find a guest couple to fill in for them and will refund the absent couple $150.  The fill in guest couple will be charged $150.

Startup

In order to build a reasonable selection of wines from which to construct tastings I have donated a number of bottles to begin the group’s cellar.  A list is attached for your information.  As we add wines to the cellar, they will be cataloged in the same fashion, with their values pro-rated according to their relative merit, and the price of the lot, including the 10% buyer’s premium and air express shipping.  Attaching a value to each wine in the cellar will facilitate trading and other disbursements which may take place, and also provides us with the enjoyment of having a dollar value attached to the wines at any given tastings.  An updated cellar listing will be distributed prior to each event.

If anyone else has wines they would like to contribute to the cellar, they would be most welcome.

Storage

A separate section of Steve & Linda’s cellar has been set aside for storage of the wines, and the initial donated wines have been moved into it.

Closing Remarks

In order to provide time to accumulate a cohesive group of wines for our first event, our initial tasting will be this Summer, perhaps in August.  In the mean time, I will keep you apprised of the bidding action and results.  Our bids for January are attached.

If you have not yet mailed me your check, please do so at your earliest convenience.  Please also contact me if you have questions or suggestions.  We’ll see you all in February at the regularly scheduled monthly tasting.
