So begins our (irregularly scheduled) Wine Syndicate Newsletter, with the first issue since our organization.\u00a0 Here is where we’ll present information about our cellar, bank account, and upcoming auctions, purchases and events.\u00a0 If any of you have items you’d like distributed, please pass them along and I’ll send them out with the next mailing.<\/p>\n

Treasurer’s Report<\/h1>\n

First off, it’s quarterly dues time.\u00a0 Please pop a check in the mail to me in the amount of $150 per couple.\u00a0 I’ll need the funds to pay for any wines we purchase at the upcoming auction, and to bring our account up to a positive balance, so your early postmark would be appreciated.\u00a0 Thanks.<\/p>\n

Auction News<\/h1>\n

This Saturday marks the second Butterfield auction for us to bid at.\u00a0 I’ve attached a list of our bids, and will let you know in a couple weeks how we did.\u00a0 Frankly, I don’t expect much at this auction.\u00a0 The bulk of the wines are from a well known collector, Dr. Marvin C. Overton, and I expect there to be a lot of bidding competition.<\/p>\n

My bidding focus is on completing an Haut Brion collection for a comprehensive tasting this summer.<\/p>\n

Other Acquisitions<\/h1>\n

Regardless of the March auction outcome, I plan to purchase some recent vintages of Haut Brion from Zachy’s to round out our tasting.\u00a0 The ’86, ’87, ’88 and ’89 will be among these acquisitions.\u00a0 Incidentally, the ’89 Haut Brion, at $119, is being touted as the best wine of a very best vintage, and is expected to double in price soon.<\/p>\n

Upcoming Events<\/h1>\n

When should we schedule our first tasting?\u00a0 Let’s confer at the larger group’s March meeting, and set a date.\u00a0 Perhaps at that time we can also get an update from Andy on the restaurant possibilities.<\/p>\n

Cellar Update<\/h1>\n

The wines from the last auction have been moved into the cellar, but not yet tagged.\u00a0 As always, their condition appears to be perfect.\u00a0 An updated listing, sorted by area, producer and vintage, is attached.<\/p>\n

The enclosed article is excerpted from the Wine Spectator.\u00a0 I found it interesting in a world dominated by huge spirit conglomerates to see exactly who owns what.<\/p>\n
