The Wines

Eight decades of great Burgundies ought to do the trick.

The favorite wine was overwhelmingly the 1937, followed by the 1983, 1928 and 1959. All wines scored in the 90s, and evolved for several hours. An amazing tasting!

Col Row Year Wine Price
5 28 1928 Pommard Epenots, Barolet
Given its thin, light brown color I didn’t expect this to last, but it actually held up for several hourse, increasing in complexity and sweetness. Cedar, smoke, varnish, artichoke, still very much alive and balanced. 93 points.
475
4 23 1937 Chambertin, Louis Latour
Also thin and brown, but appearances can be deceiving. Clearly the wine of the tasting, with waxy, charry notes that quickly turned to classic cherries, bacon fat and smoke. Caramel, chocolate, almonds and coconut on the palate combines to create a magnificent Almond Joy! Held up four hours. 97 points.
390
5 23 1949 Charmes-Chambertin, Liger-Belair
Probably not the best example of this wine. Hints of greatness spoiled by a maderized nose. Some smoke, fat and cherries. Oddly, some of the oxidation worked its way out over a few hours. 88 points.
317
4 22 1959 Gevrey Chambertin, Bouchard Aine & Fils
Better color than the first three, and quite fruity, but not nearly the complexity level. Still, a great Burg. 95 points.
380
5 29 1966 Echezeaux, Doudet-Naudin
Vanilla nose, still tannic, earthy, coffe. Another great wine. 94 points.
325
5 9 1978 Chambolle Musigny, Trapet
Youthful, fruity, earthy, mushrooms. 92 points.
140
6 28 1983 Grands Echezeaux, Domaine de la Romanee Conti
Classic for its type, mint, iron, a bit thin given expectations. 93 points.
300
3 23 1993 La Romanee – Bouchard, Pere et Fils
The disappointing wine of the tasting, since it was the big name in vineyards. Very young and fresh with vanilla and tannin, but not much going on. 91 points.
190
2000 Gevrey Chambertin, Clos Prieur
Added by John. Tight mushrooms, closed and a bit thin. Needs time. 91 points.
9 28 2000 Ch d’Yquem (tenth) 213
