Bring Your Own FlightThis was a pseduo Syndicate event, with wines provided by the attendees:

Ron & Bev
John & Debbie
Steve & Linda
Andres & Paula
Andy
Martin

Each couple was requested to bring two or three wines in bags for a mystery flight. As it turned out, they brought more! And what a great collection of wines they were:

23 1999 Clos de la Roche, Laurent Ron Young, smoke, big, bacon 96
24 1997 Martinelli Chardonnay Ron waxy, caramel, oxidized 86
25 1976 Ch. Montelena Ron Incredibly youthful 93
26 1976 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Ron tired and a bit sour 91
27 1976 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Ron fading, drink up 89
28 1986 Lafaurie Peyraguey Sauternes Ron medium amber, raisins, good acid 90

Also, chef outdid himself. Highlights for me were the Hamachi Salad, where every ingredient was an explosion of flavor; the corn and truffle soup, incredibly rich and creamy; the generous serving of huge scallops; the spinach that came with the duck; the very bacony mac & cheese; a great bone-in filet, so flavorful; all the passed desserts. Come to think of it, basically everything was my favorite!

Thanks for the wonderful wines, everyone!

2008-3 Do It Yourself Blind Pairs

Do It Yourself Blind Pairs

at Capital Grille

July 26, 2008 at 6:00 pm
The Theme

And now for something completely different. Each couple is requested to bring a pair of bagged wines. Good wines. Preferably really good wines. The wines should be theoretically really different, but in practice hard to tell which is which. This could mean one really expensive and one really cheap, one old world and one new world, one old but vibrant and one young but complex, same producer but two very different years, same year but two very different producers, etc. Knock yourselves out.

The goal is to fool everyone, but there has to be some possibility to figure it out. We don’t want to have to tell which one is from Hungary and which one is from Turkmenistan.

We’ll start by trying to figure out what they are, completely blind. Then, once we tire of that, the provider will tell us what the two wines are and we’ll try to figure out which is which.

The Results

Thanks to everyone for all the great wines! It was quite an amazing group! A really fun event, with lots of surprises. Below is the list of wines, with my ratings:

2002-2 Mini Verticals

Number 43 —  April, 2002

Trip to Tampa:

In the Spring of 2002 most of The Wine Syndicate group went to Tampa. Ron Siegel organized two wonderful dinners, and a luncheon and tasting in Tarpon Springs.
Ken from Bern’s set up this dinner at Spartaco. The chef/owner was charming and gracious. We put ourselves in his hands, and the courses just kept coming: Bruschetta, Calamari, Mozarella, Crab and Lobster on Angel Hair Pasta, Tangerine Sorbet, Broiled Grouper, Rack of Lamb, and Chocolate Mousse.

B21 didn’t look exactly like Ron was expecting. But it’s a wonderful wine shop, and they provided us with a lovely 12-bottle tasting. I took the opportunity to stock up on Italian reds, and even found Danielle’s long-sought-after Essencia.

B21 even paid for our wonderful lunch at Louis Pappas’, near the Tarpon Springs pier. Joan, our waitress, was an absolute hoot. The Greek food was delicious and heavy — one more course and we would have needed a wheelbarrow to get back to the car. We had to go back to the hotel and sleep it off.

Dinner at Bern’s Steakhouse with an opportunity to sample eight noteworthy wines from their incredible list. Ken and Drew were incredibly accommodating, and David Laxer came around to visit. For me, the wine of the weekend was the 1957 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos del La Roche from Pierre Ponnelle, a steal at $156. Thanks to Ron for all the arrangements… it was a blast.

Our Last Event

At our last tasting, we matched food with wine, and the syndicate members took turns as guest chef. Thanks to everyone for the wonderful delicacies! Every course was absolutely delicious!

Auction Action

Thanks to all of who signed up to buy duplicates from the January auction. Total successful bids were about $7000 including shipping, but with the duplicates removed, the Syndicate’s tab was about $5500. Thank goodness we caught the buyer’s market for wine when we did. Since then auction prices have gone through the roof.

Nearly all of our January lots went below the bottom estimate, many at less than half of retail:

We decided to raise the dues temporarily to take advantage of the great auction market. Please let me know if this is a problem for anyone.

The strategy is certainly paying off, as the current acquisition cost of the Syndicate Cellar is over $15,000, and the retail value is at least twice that.

The dues this time do not include the dinner. Please bring your dues of $200 per person to the event. Also please bring funds for any duplicate wines you purchased.

Front row: Jim and Patty Clausen, Al Gane, Debbie and John Henline, Andy and Libby Crocket.
Back row: Ron Siegel, Martin Chaney, Linda and Steve Alcorn, Priscilla and Dick Robinson, and Bev Siegel.

Our Last Event

The favorite wine at our Burgundy Blowout was the ’93 Gevrey Chambertin.

Another HUGE “Thank You” to Ron and Bev for the stinky cheese.

It was decided at the last meeting that the dues would be raised to $150 per person per event, to cover the increased cost of dinner.

Our Next Event

Our next event will be at Shula’s Steakhouse at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort, Saturday, August 12th, 2000 at 4PM. The theme of this event is “Odd Man Out”. The following wines will be poured blind in the flights shown:

1996-2 Petite Sirah

Number 18 —  April, 1996

It’s Time for Some Chewy Wines

At our last tasting the most popular wine was a Stag’s Leap Petite Sirah donated by George.  Taking our cue from that, this months tasting will feature eight Petite Sirahs, and a couple of ringers.  Please note that we will be convening at 2:30 p.m. this time, because of scheduling constraints on the wine room.

Treasurer’s Report

Please bring your dues of $110 per person to the next event.  As before, this sum includes the complete cost of dinner and the cellar fund for the quarter.

Auction News

My bottom fishing at the January 29 Butterfield auction netted the following wines:

1938

Ch. Mouton Rothschild
(A good pre-war vintage.  Mouton is a first growth red Bordeaux.)

120

1947

Clos de Tart
(Wonderful year for red Burgundy.  Clos de Tart was the standout wine at the Henline’s Burgundy tasting several years ago.)

120

1961

Ch. Haut Brion Blanc

(This is that spectacular and exclusive white Graves from our first tasting, but from the stellar 1961 vintage.  The 1988 is $160 at release!)

190

$ 430

I have also obtained a subscription to the new Davis & Co. Auctions in Chicago.  These are run by the people who used to run Christie’s, and seem to offer opportunities very similar to Butterfield.  I’ll bring the catalog to the next meeting.
